Moving readers through your sentence is like lifting a plane into flight.
The plane needs a clear, smooth runway at the beginning to build up speed. Once it has momentum, it can handle the complexity of lifting off and climbing through turbulent air.
But the plane meets obstacles on the runway, it never gets off the ground.
Sentences work the same way.
If you start with complexity, readers never gain the momentum they need. But give them a smooth start, and they can handle almost anything at the end.

The previous tool can be summarized with a familiar aphorism: first things first.
This one has its own: save the best for last.
The end of a sentence is known as its stress position. It's where readers naturally expect the most important, newest, or most complex information. It's the part that resonates after the sentence is finished, the part that lingers in the reader's short-term memory.
The principle:
- Organize the information in your sentences from simple to complex, from familiar to new.
- Begin with a short, easily grasped subject and verb.
- Let the sentence build toward its most significant content at the end.
Why It Works
When readers move through the first few words of a sentence, they're building momentum.
If those early words are short and familiar, the reader accelerates quickly. By the time they reach complex material later in the sentence, they have enough cognitive momentum to process it.
But if you front-load the complexity—long subjects, unfamiliar technical terms, dense qualifications—readers stall.
They're trying to process difficult material before they have any context or momentum. The sentence feels impenetrable, not because of the content, but because of where the content sits.
The stress position also sets reader expectations.
Whatever you place at the end of a sentence subtly signals what's coming next in the text. Readers use the stressed content to anticipate the direction of the passage. When you control the stress position, you control the rhythm and trajectory of your reader's experience.
