Neither eye is wrong. But neither eye alone can see depth; depth is computed from the difference between them.
This computation of depth from difference is known as the parallax view. Astronomers use it to measure the distance to stars no instrument could reach head-on.

A couple of weeks ago in the writing mentorship, two members read their letters of response to the same essay—Anu Atluru's "Make Something Heavy."
Corey went first. He didn't like it.
"It left me feeling confused, almost like AI writing does sometimes," he wrote. "The piece feels like a college essay where the author was struggling to meet a minimum word count."

Then Vincenzo.
The same essay had "an inspirational effect" on him. It made him want to build with more seriousness. The central analogy was so good he wanted to steal it for his own writing.

Two careful readers. One text. Opposite interpretations.
That's usually the moment a feedback session gets awkward—one person hedges, the other concedes, and the group splits the difference into something useless.
But these feedback sessions aren't about cheerleading. We want them to be useful.
So I gave them a piece of advice that an English professor gave me years ago, which one of his professors had passed on to him. It was the whole of his method for how to read critically, and it made this feedback session a lot more useful:
