Make a promise the wrong reader can refuse

A vague promise pulls in the wrong crowd, who punish you for wasting their time; make it specific enough that the wrong reader can excuse themselves.

Two books tackle the same problem — building offers customers want. Value Proposition Design sounds smart but fuzzy and has a few thousand reviews; Alex Hormozi's $100M Offers promises, right on the cover, offers "so good people feel stupid saying no," and has many times as many. How it works

A specific promise does two jobs at once: it magnetises the right people and lets the wrong people excuse themselves — and the second job matters as much as the first, because the wrong crowd is who leaves the salty one-star reviews. Name the change: what will be different in the reader's life after the last page? Swap mushy goals ("write better") for concrete ones ("land high-value clients," "book paid speaking gigs"). William does it on YouTube by opening "if you're a nonfiction writer…"; fiction writers bounce, and that's the point — better to lose the wrong viewers than to collect low watch-time and complaints.

Why it matters

A fuzzy promise feels safe because it seems to include everyone, but inclusion is the trap: the people it mis-attracts arrive with the wrong expectations and punish you for the mismatch. A sharp promise trades reach for fit, and fit is what produces five-star reviews and word of mouth — the readers who stay knew exactly what they were getting, and you delivered.

Try it

  1. Name the change your reader will feel by the last page, in concrete terms, not "better."
  2. Pitch the book in one tight sentence to a real person, then stop and watch their face; each puzzled look shows you what to sharpen.
  3. When strangers get it on the first try, freeze that line — it's your subtitle, your back cover, your headline.

Common pitfalls

Widening the promise to sell more, which quietly invites the very readers who'll resent it. And don't confuse specific with narrow-and-dull: the promise must still name something the right reader urgently wants, stated boldly enough to be worth repeating.
